Born in Scotland, William Turnbull (1922-2012) was a sculptor and painter, creating art that straddled surrealism and minimalism. He studied sculpture at the Slade School (1946–8) where he met Eduardo Paolozzi. In 1973, Tate showcased a retrospective of this work, and in 1995, he had a major show at the Serpentine Gallery, among others.
