John Piper (1903 – 1992) was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows, and opera and theatre sets. Piper was an official war artist in World War II, where he depicted bomb-damaged churches and landmarks that were acquired by several public collections. Piper collaborated with others such as the potter Geoffrey Eastop and the artist Ben Nicholson. Later in his career he made limited-edition prints. The Tate collection holds 180 of Piper's works. Other collections holding Piper's work include the Art Institute of Chicago, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, amongst many others. Tate Britain held a major retrospective exhibition of his works in 1983-4.
‘The Visitation’ was designed as part of a portfolio honouring the 1975 Holy Year.
